Mausoleet i Halikarnassos var et af antikkens syv vidundere: det var gravmælet rejst for Kong Mausolos af Karien, og det var kendt ikke kun for sin størrelse, men også for de smukke skulpturer, som smykkede mausoleet.

Efter antikken forfaldt gravmælet, og der var ikke meget tilbage af fordums pragt i 1522, hvor mange bygningselementer fra mausoleumsruinen blev slæbt væk og genbrugt i Halikarnassos' korsridderborg.

Selve lokaliteten gik i glemmebogen og blev først fundet igen af englænderen, C.T. Newton i 1856. Han bragte en del skulpturrester med sig hjem til British Museum. Fra 1966-77 udgravede danske arkæologer under ledelse af K. Jeppesen igen mausoleumstomten.

I femte bind af publikationen samler Kristian Jeppesen trådene af fund fra mausoleet, både rester i Tyrkiet og på British Museum. Han giver sit bud på, hvordan mausoleet har set ud på baggrund af antikke beskrivelser og de arkæologiske fund.
