Katharina den Stores regeringstid (1762-1796) markerer et højdepunkt i det russiske kejserriges historie, og vestlig livsstil gennemsyrede kejserhoffet, godsejeraristokratiet og byernes overklasse. Den strenge symmetri i Ludvig XIVs parker blev efterlignet ved de store kejserlige slotte, men også den britiske landskabshave vandt indpas i Rusland - i en form, der var tilpasset Ruslands korte somre og strenge vintre.
