Gunnar Hjelholt var 24 år, aktiv i modstandsbevægelsen og studerede statskundskab, da han i 1944 blev arresteret af Gestapo og sendt til koncentrationslejren Porta Westfalica. Da han blev befriet i foråret 1945, havde oplevelserne i lejren gjort stort indtryk på ham og lagt grunden til en international karriere inden for anvendt socialpsykologi.
