This volume contains the contributions from at symposium which was organized as a part of the world congress of the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée in Jyväskylä, Finland in August 1996. The title of the symposium was the same as the title of this publication. The overall theme was covered from a number of different angles including pedagogy, applied linguistics, psychology and sociology. Different societies and minority situations were described. The aim was, and with this publication still is, to combine these angles in order to achieve a more general understanding of successive child bilingualism.
